Overland journey to Bayanga

Bayanga is located in 550 km distance to Bangui, with only 100 km being paved. It is possible to rent a four-wheel drive in Bangui to get to Bayanga., In the dry season and with an appropriate vehicle Bayanga can be reached within 12 hours. However, in the rainy season the time needed can easily extend to 16 hours, depending on the state of the roads which can sometimes be locally degraded (daily traffic of timber trucks). The journey can be fascinating, with many small villages located along the way. There are rivers to cross, bamboo forests, marshy areas, savannahs and rainforests to pass through.

The journey can be spread over two days and the night can be spend in the guest lodge of the ECOFAC project in Ngotto or in the tourist “Lodge de l’Ile du Buffle Rouge”. The latter is located next to the rapids of the Lobaye River and is a pleasant place to stay with typical round huts and professional gastronomy. Boat trips are offered and one has the possibility to see hippos.

A CAR road map (1:1.500.000 - 3615 IGN - Paris) can be found in well-stocked bookstores, with Bayanga being marked but not the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park.
